My design after Buechenberg 88.5/159
a'A440 10 frets 37 ribs Model V
This is a larger bodied instrument of my own design, closely based on
the style of Mattheus Buechenberg, who was active in Rome in the first
decades of the 17C. It has a fluted narrow ribbed back of 37 ribs in
rosewood, as the originals often had, but can be made in yew for a
warmer tone. The sound board can have a triple rose, as was commonest,
or a single large rose. Occasionally, they were made with a further
small rose near the bridge by the diapasons. Stringing is (6x2) or
(6x1)(8x1). My drawing of Model V is available from
The Lute Society.
