GLASS ECHOES 2007

Glass Echoes 2007 was a selected and curated exhibition of glass by 17 newly established and emerging artists. The compelling Bloomsbury setting was the Crypt Gallery of St. Pancras Church in Euston Road, London. This is an atmospheric venue with alcoves allowing for a variety of small works and larger installations. The pieces on show were chosen by the Curator, Angela Thwaites, to chime in with this unusual, echoing space. They all complemented a subterranean world of things past and things to come, a place where rest and regeneration share the same domain.

The Curator’s concept was to use the architecture of the building and display the pieces ‘not superimposed on top, but embedded deep in the stonework, like something growing out of the gloom.’ So there were no white box plinths. Stone and wood from the building melded with the glass, presenting surprises throughout a white childhood mitten gleaming above a vault railing; Byzantine relics flowing across a fragmented screen; brandy-snap-thin discs of pâte de verre earily twisting in an alcove; exquisite globes and lenses embracing the brickwork.

On show were conceptual pieces, made with the environment in mind, using a variety of techniques casting, fusing, blowing, pâte de verre, screen-printing, etching and mixed media. Exhibitors were: Fabrizia Bazzo, Karen Blackwell, Emily Chan, Jane Dorner, Charlotte Ellis and Tina Lindström, Hannah Facey, Qimei Guo, Belinda Salmon Harding, Marion Hewitt, James Lethbridge, Zakia Malcolm, Ana Robinson, Juliana Stoney, Jessica Townsend, Aviva Walton, Steven Whitehill and Angela Thwaites was so taken by the ‘Glass Echoes’ concept that she agreed to exhibit too.

The exhibition ran for a week from 2 to 8 August 2007. The organising committee, encouraged by its success, hope to make this a biennial glass event.
